Fillings

What is a filling?

A filling is a material that is used in a tooth cavity to replace the decay.  Remember that practicing good oral hygiene is the best prevention for decay, as we never like to see you lose portions of your teeth due to unhealthy habits.

When is a filling needed?

A filling is needed when there is decay, or a cavity, found in your tooth.  It’s not healthy for your mouth or tooth to have the decay remain, as it can spread and cause greater issues such as total tooth loss.

A filling may also be needed in the following circumstances:
  •  A chipped tooth.
  •  To close the space between two teeth.
  •  A cracked or broken tooth.
  •  A tooth that is worn.

What is a filling made up of?

Here at Smile Care, Dr. Paul is a strong believer in the composite resin filling, which is a tooth-colored material that has many advantages over other types of fillings.   They are very strong, will last for many years, and help to keep your smile looking natural.  Composite resin fillings are made up of different forms of plastic and ceramic, and are safe materials for your mouth.

What is the procedure like?

Your tooth and all associated areas of your mouth will be numbed to provide you with a pain-free procedure, as your comfort is of utmost importance to us.  The affected area of your mouth will be cleaned, any decay will be removed, and the area will be cleaned and dried again to prepare for the filling material.  Once the material is placed on your tooth, it is shaped and polished to ensure your smile is natural and functional once again.  This procedure can be accomplished in usually one appointment.
